Travel Agency vs Travel Independently

Travel Agency or Travel Independently

Which one is more suitable based on your situation and desires

A question that is as old as time…

Is it better to use a travel agency or to travel independently…?

Although this question is definitely something that depends on the person, the group and the circumstances, I’d like to share my story as well as highlight a few bullet points to share with you.

In the past, I was always a solo traveller. I travelled around the world on my own, figuring things out as they unfolded and as I arrived at new and exciting destinations.

I loved the whimsical aspect of the unknown and being excited about what might happen next. MInd you this was the early 2000’s, pre smartphone and GPS. I’d be lucky to find an internet cafe to message my parents and let them know I was ok.

I loved the whimsical aspect of the unknown and being excited about what might happen next. MInd you this was the early 2000’s, pre smartphone and GPS. I’d be lucky to find an internet cafe to message my parents and let them know I was ok.

As the times changed, travel changed so did what I was looking for in  travel experiences.

While the unknown and whimsical approach was fun and alluring, there were aspects of my travels that I missed out on due to not being an expert in the area and ultimately not knowing what to look for and what to expect.

Benefits of traveling with an expert.

It wasn’t until I did my first organized group experience around the Golden Triangle of South East Asia (Thailand/Laos/Vietnam)  that I saw first hand the benefits of traveling with an expert. We were given the golden ticket to all the secret spots and local gems, the entire trip.

From eating at all the best restaurants and street food, trying new and interesting foods that I had no idea existed and taking a boat down the Mekong River that only had our small group occupying it. While all the other boats in the marina, the other tourists were squeezed in there like sardines.

This was the moment for me that I realized:

  1. I loved organized travel
  2. I was an expert in my own lane of travel in Costa Rica.

There are many travel agencies and tour operation companies out there. They all have their own niche and their lane of expertise. In this article, I will solely be focusing on the Oshiis Adventures based out of the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica.

At Casa Oshiis it is more than just accommodation. You have the opportunity to instantly become apart of a lifestyle and a community, while your days are filled with laughter, adventures and exploration.

We could start by telling you about the house and how its fully equip, how it has everything you’ll need, but those aren’t the selling features.

What’s great about Casa Oshiis is the team of people associated with the houses to make you and your loved ones feel welcomed and safe and to guide you towards the most amazing, authentic, and memorable experience.

Your host will welcome you upon arrival with open arms and open hearts. They will be your point of contact in regards to anything related to the house and the area. Private Chef

If you are anything like me, one of my favourite parts about travelling is the food!! I love trying new exotic fruits, flavours and traditional plates!

With so many choices for restaurants these days its hard to know which are the most delicious and authentic. It must be even harder for those who have dietary restrictions.

This is where a personal chef is key! Your chef will source local ingredients to prepare a variety of traditional and world cuisine, according to your likes, needs and dietary preferences. Plus who doesn’t love a home cooked meal! A meal prepared at home with love will always beat a commercial version of the same dish.

How to Stay Balanced During Covid as an Adventurer

How to Stay Balanced as an

Adventurer During Covid

A letter from Amy – Founder of Oshiis Surf

Find things to feed your adventurous spirit and stay balanced in a world of chaos and the unknown during COVID 19

Covid has been tough on us all in different ways. Some got hit harder than others. Some were already struggling pre-covid.

Finding balancing and remaining positive in these times is extremely crucial.

I personally lost my job and my travel agency was put on an indefinite hold. I had my annually trips planned to Asia and Central America to visit family, the highlight of the year, both cancelled.

Even during these hard times, I felt it was important to help those who were in a harder situation than I.

I purged my place and donated anything that we didn’t use often and could be used elsewhere. We sent monthly support to our team and family in Costa Rica to buy rations and help with salaries. We even organized a GoFundMe to help support an entire community in need. A community that majority relies on tourism.

Yet, for me, one of the hardest parts of Covid has been to put my adventurous travel nomadic spirit on hold. On Pause.

It’s been over 20 years since I have stayed in one country for over a year, and at the beginning of September 2020, I will complete an entire year without traveling.

I know this may sound extremely privileged, but this is something that I hold deep in my spirit and travelling is something more of a lifestyle than just a hobby or business. It feeds my soul. Without it, I feel incomplete.

That being said, I’ve been forced to find other things to feed my adventurous spirit and help create balance in my life and in a world of chaos and the unknown.

Here are a few things I have implemented into my routine to stay balanced during COVID 19

  • STAY ACTIVE

Daily physical activity is a must! I can’t express how important this is. Wether it’s just a walk, a bike ride, a workout, a swim. What ever it may be. Just keep moving

I’ve picked up mountain biking. I love being in the forest, riding fast, climbing hills, avoiding tree trucks, finding waterfalls and wild flowers. It gets my adrenaline pumping while being outdoors and playing with the elements.

  • WORK YOUR MIND

Read, write, study, learn a new skill, paint, create. Do it all. Something to get your eyes off a screen and tapping into some dormant talents and skills.

  • MEDITATE

It might sound corny, but it works. The search within comes with the greatest rewards.

  • GO EXPLORE

Get out into nature. Being forced to stay indoors for weeks/ months with TV/ phone/ tablet screens is not healthy. Find your closest forest, lake, river, mountain or beach. Get dirty. Hug a tree. Look for wildlife. All of the above and more will do a world of wonder for your spirit.

  • HEALTHY DIET

A wise man once said “you are what you eat”. Eating junk food will make you feel sluggish and low vibration. Eat food with life and you will feel alive.

  • KEEP POSITIVE LIKE-MINDED PEOPLE CLOSE. GET RID OF TOXIC PEOPLE.

I know this sounds harsh, but it’s important. The energy you keep around you is crucial. These times are hard enough without toxic negative people making it worse. Don’t just have a COVID bubble, you should have a positive vibes bubble too.

  • FAST NETFLIX/ AMAZON PRIME/ CRAVE/ INSTAGRAM/ FB (unless for business)

Try it for one month. See how you feel? Pay attention to where your energy and your time goes.

If you get bored listen to an audio book or podcast. Or even better if you like to watch episodes and movies, subscribe GAIA.COM

There are endless programs and documentaries discussing real-life topics that aren’t on the mainstream media. Things that make you go hmmmmmmm…

At Casa Oshiis it is more than just accommodation. You have the opportunity to instantly become apart of a lifestyle and a community, while your days are filled with laughter, adventures and exploration.

All with zero planning!!

Your Hosts

Your host will welcome you upon arrival with open arms and open hearts. They will be your point of contact in regards to anything related to the house and the area. Another thing that sets Casa Oshiis apart from the rest is the option to have your own personal adventure guide. Having this option incorporated into your accommodation really simplifies the head ache of planning out an itinerary.

Your adventure guide will be your new best friend. They will be there to accompany you and your loved ones throughout your daily adventure activities. You will love hearing their stories about growing up in the area and them sharing their knowledge, insights and some of the local gems with you. You will get to experience so much more when you have them there to explain and point out things you that you might have normally just walked by…

All of our adventure guides are native to the area and have a strong connection and awareness when it comes to living in harmony with Mother Nature. This gift is especially helpful when looking for animal sightings in the wild. We guarantee animal sightings 100% when with our guides.
